Already before the new year, you can order in the dealership the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, in delivery from next spring. Let’s talk about one of the few SUVs that already boasts a consolidated history of hybrid, one of the first to challenge the diesel SUVs, which are still the biggest. And it is among the most interesting news in its segment together with the new Honda CR-V hybrid, also coming in the coming months.
The fifth generation of the Japanese SUV, proposed with two and four-wheel drive, introduces not a few innovations. The new RAV4 (in Italy only hybrid)is developed for the first time on the TNGA-K platform (Toyota New Global Architecture-K) and this – on paper- should guarantee a net dynamic improvement compared to the previous series. The TNGA platform also allowed Japanese engineers to design a larger and more spacious interior. With the seats in place, the boot has a capacity of 580 liters, 79 more than the outgoing generation. The step, grown 30 mm, for a total of 2,690, is another factor that makes the difference.

Then there is the new fourth-generation hybrid transmission, which combines a new 2.5-liter petrol engine with a powerful electric motor (88kW). For a total of 222 hp of combined power, slightly lower (218 hp) in the 4WD variant. The declared consumption and CO 2 emission values (measured in the NEDC cycle) are respectively in the 4.4 l / 100 km and 100 g / km (a threshold that excludes it from incentives). Numbers, however, concerning the two-wheel drive version: the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 4WD is still awaiting approval. In the front-wheel-drive version, emissions of NOx nitrogen oxides are 96% lower than the limit set by the current regulations of 60 mg/km of Euro6 petrol, and 97% lower than the expected limit of 80 mg/km of diesel Euro6.
Obtained thanks to an additional electric motor mounted at the rear – and therefore without mechanical connections between the front and rear axles – the AWD-i all-wheel drive has been revisited , with a 30% increase in torque on the rear axle , allowing a front split -retro that can go from 100: 0 to 20:80. The AWD-i electrical system automatically optimizes torque levels, adapting them to driving conditions, while the AWD Integrated Management (AIM) function, also introduced on this generation of the Rav4, it simultaneously handles multiple vehicle functions (steering assistance, throttle, and brake control, gear shifting and torque level distribution) according to the selected driving mode. Finally, there is a new limited slip differential control called Trail Mode.
The 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is also the first Toyota model equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a driver assistance system package that includes the new Pre-Collision (PCS) system, the Road Sign Recognition (RSA) feature that communicates with the PCS and active lane maintenance (LTA).
