2019 2019 BMW S 1000 XR REVIEW – TOURING DRIVING POSITION, BUT SPORT-LIKE ATTITUDE. AND THE ENGINE ROAD TEST, STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE NEW BMW S 1000 XR
If it had four wheels we could call it a crossover and the BMW itself places the S 1000 XR in the Adventure range: that, to understand, where we also find the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure. And yet the mechanical base is related to that of the naked S 1000 R and the supersport BMW S 1000 RR. Strange combination, which to those who expect a relative of the all-terrain can reserve several surprises
The driving position of the 2019 BMW S 1000 XR, it is true, is reminiscent of the GS sisters, with a slightly sportier footboard position. Comfortable, but it is easy to understand that the XR is a bike with a dual soul, which on the one hand is suitable for touring and combines determination and a true sports personality. The numbers speak for themselves: the 4-cylinder in-line engine of 999cc unleashes 165 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, for a weight of 228 kg in running order (ie with the tank 90% full). A bomb.
The line, embellished by the new 2019 liveries, is a mix of sleek lines and complex details, which denote a particularly careful stylistic and aerodynamic research (but that complicates life when you want to wash and dry the bike by hand). On the saddle, despite the rather ample median section and the seat raised from 840 to 855 mm from the ground of the trial Sports HP equipment, the support on the ground is steady for medium-sized riders.
Handling & Control
Inspired by certain confidence from the first taste, the 2019 BMW S 1000 XR, and the Alica aficionados will be at ease due to the handlebar controls with a strong family feeling. The clutch, it must be said, has a male consistency and is not adjustable (as opposed to the front brake lever), but the detachment is easy to manage. Not bad the glance on the mixed instrumentation, with a well readable analog tachometer completed by a digital display and by a handful of spies to frame the whole. In addition to a choreographic change light at the top of the dashboard that is so racing.
No more talk, it’s time to talk about driving. And as always in these cases, the first kilometers are the most revealing ones. At low speed, a certain tendency of the steering wheel to close immediately emerges, quite typical of the bikes made to go strong and here connected to a quick chassis, which transmits a feeling of lightness and reactivity. Despite the possibility of adjusting the Dynamic ESA electronic suspension, the structure is always sustained and the passenger, in particular, can count on an enviable arrangement: raised above the rider’s level and with good ergonomic handles. to cling to.
As the speed increases, some vibrations arise between the saddle and the footboards, which generally do not bother them. A little more annoying are those who feel themselves on the handlebars in the city march, but even those I soon get used to. On the highway I appreciate valid aerodynamic protection despite tapered superstructures: the front fairing can be adjusted to two different heights easily and in motion, simply by pulling or pushing it, thanks to a pantograph mechanism. The saddle is pleasantly firm and the leg angle is particularly favorable.
NEW BMW S 1000 XR VS BMW R 1250 GS
On long journeys, I might want a longer sixth for touring use. This makes it clear that the balance between smooth driving and sporting emotions slightly privileges the latter. Does this XR really lend itself to traveling? If that was the job for which I want to buy a motorcycle, I say it plainly, my choice would fall on a GS. The one where the S 1000 XR wins hands down on its two-cylinder sister is the emotion that gives between the curves and in sports driving in general.
When the meters of judgment is the ability to take the rope and keep the line, in addition to the rapidity in changing direction, the 2019 BMW S 1000 XR is the reference model. And in every situation the four-cylinder engine plays the load from ninety, triggering emotions starting from its incredible sound. Like on the naked S1000 R, the XR also emits a barely a little rough howl that does so much racing and accompanies climbing with very choreographic crackles and gurgles: even when you’re not driving with a knife between your teeth. His sonorities are rich and complex, with a corollary of special effects that, in my memory, knows no comparison.
And then there’s the substance. The XR is not only sound declarations of intent but also formidable performance. At all speeds the engine is always running and turning compact: in the city, I always find myself in sixth gear without noticing. Braking is also very good: ready, very powerful and equally adaptable. And when you ask this BMW even more, she indulges you, with sweet and discreet stability control. Moderate the soaring in an effective but not at all invasive way and even when you try to close the gas curves on the pavé, he lets you brush, without sudden cuts in supply. The quick-shifter system is suitable for changing gears without using the clutch.
2019 BMW S 1000 XR Price & Equipment
How much does all this cost? The price of the BMW S 1000 XR 2019 starts at 16,600 euros with standard stability and Road and Rain mappings. In the Dynamic package (1,180 euros) I find the Shift Assistant Pro gear-shift device (quick shifter) and the ABS Pro effective even in the fold thanks to the cornering function. Luggage rack, bag holder, heated grips and electronically controlled suspension Dynamic ESA are in the € 1,420 Touring pack.
